News from the Farm: 1st Delivery Postponed to May 31

I just received the bottom letter from Maggie at the farm. For other farm news, check their website. They have a great blog of their own– including news on their new bee hive! This postponement means our shares will begin May 31.

Hello All,

Greetings from the farm! Lots of good news (and some changes) to report…

Firstly, and most importantly, please spread the news…. We are postponing our CSA by 1 week. The first delivery will now take place THE WEEK OF MAY 28th. The program will still run for 27 consecutive weeks, but instead of ending on the week of Thanksgiving, it will end the week after Thanksgiving.

Why are we postponing the start of the season? Remember that unusually cold and not-so-sunny period earlier this spring? Well, our baby plants couldn’t get a good head start, so they’re about a week behind. They might be a little small, but they’re looking beautiful! By postponing the start of the season by one week, you’ll get more in your first box, and more at the end of the season when you just can’t get enough of the good stuff! So basically, it’s a win-win. More food for you, more time for our plants to grow, less stress for us….

What are we up to? We just finished transplanting our onions out into the fields yesterday which is a huge relief. Transplanting onions is a tricky process since they don’t form big root systems in the soil cells and can easily fall apart as you transfer them into the transplanter which in turns plants them in the ground. Sounds complicated, and it is! Luckily, James did a stellar job of driving the tractor and overseeing the whole process. Next up… More seeding in the greenhouse for our successive greens plantings, and root veg direct seeding out in the field. Matthew has been busy prepping our “new” plot of land up on Sound Avenue which will soon be planted with tomatoes and eggplants. Yum!

Construction is (soon to be) underway!
We are waiting for our contractors to arrive any day now (………) to transform our back barn into a state-of-the-art CSA produce washing and packing facility. We’ll post pictures on our blog as soon as work starts. I’ve learned by now not to hold my breath, but time IS ticking!

Workers
Good news!!!!! Our wonderful workers have their appointment at the American consulate in Mexico City on Friday, which means that they’ll be here next week just in time for the start of the season. We already have 4 local workers here, but we are getting busy and could use the extra help! They’re about 2 months behind schedule, but a major improvement over last year’s situation when they didn’t arrive until August!

That’s about it for now! We are so excited for the season to begin, and we are looking forward to making it our best year yet! Questions, concerns, ideas, suggestion??? Call or e-mail any time: 631-722-3302 or info@goldenearthworm.com

All the best,

Maggie, Matthew & James
