News From CSA Pastures
A letter from Nancy up at Lewis Waite. Remember to get your orders in by January 7 th for the next delivery on January 12.
January, ah January! The air is crisp, the ground is white and fluffy, and the Arctic air is coming again soon – just as we all seem to be fairly acclimated to the milder daily temperatures. Over the past week we had a few storms and about a foot of new snow. The skiing at Bromley Mountain in VT was beautiful – I actually took a day off and kicked up my heels. Today around the house the snow is perfect for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. The dogs are making tracks encircling the house and barns and up to the doghouses. The cats have a track to the bird feeder area for their favorite winter activity of bird watching. The sledding would be a real thrill from the top of the hill. We are a bit afraid the sled could not be steered around the fences and stonewalls! We would just have to know when to bail out. The little ski area we can see from the house, Willard Mountain, is happy about all the snow and is lit at night for skiing and tubing. Another scream filled winter activity was likely the annual dip in Lake George on New Years Day which was highlighted in the local newspaper with pictures of swimmers in the slushy water. Brrrrr….no one lasts too long.
Between feeding all the animals, loading the porch with wood, working in spurts on the new barn, and moving the vehicles around so we can be plowed out, we’ve been relaxing a bit. We are reading and planning for the next season. We are going to the NOFA conference (Northeast Organic Farming Association) in Saratoga on January 25-27. The seminars sound great and cover many topics. The ideas shared at these conferences are pretty inspiring, like the Stockman Grass Farmer conference we attended last winter. I am also looking forward to more skiing if the snow keeps piling up.
We’d like to thank all of you who helped with the winter scheduling and finding locations for the deliveries. We thank the hosts of each location and encourage anyone to call or email with any questions or concerns. We try to make things as easy as possible and hope you’ll let us know if any problem or issue crops up. We would also welcome feedback you may want to share about the products from all of our farms and please never hesitate to let us know if there is a problem with any product. We aim to please.
