Happy 2008 CSA Season!
It has been a long wait but finally CSAs are seeing fresh local vegetables from their farms again. Shares of beautiful lettuce, arugula, spring onions, radishes and kale are being delivered to neighborhoods all over the city. This year there are 62 CSAs in communities across the five boroughs and a record number of members have joined. New communities this year include Bushwick, Fort Greene, Long Island City, Grand Street, DUMBO, the South Street Seaport, East 14th Street, the Upper East Side, Bay Ridge, Ditmas Park and Riverdale.
Throughout the season this newsletter will arrive in your inbox once a week with news of food and agricultural events in NYC and the region, policy updates, what’s happening at Just Food and a “Did You Know?” segment to help CSA members learn more about what it takes to farm for CSA in NYC. If you have any suggestions or ideas for the newsletter please let me know!
We would love to reach all of the CSA members in the city with this information so we ask that each CSA forward the newsletter out to your member list (using the “forward email” button at the bottom of the newsletter rather than your email forward) or you can send us your list and we will get it to members directly. And, as always, if you decide you don’t want to receive the newsletter there is an “unsubscribe” button at the bottom of each one.
I look forward to seeing you at distributions this season!
Monday Workshop Reminder! Cooking Demonstrations at Your CSA
Do you get questions from members about what to do with that bok choy? Or need new ideas of how to use zucchini? Come Monday to meet Angela Davis, Just Food’s Community Food Education Coordinator, and learn both how to do a cooking demo at your site or how to tap into Just Food’s Community Chef program for a demo this season.
Next in the Series: July’s workshop will be held on Monday July 14th from 6-8 and will cover getting feedback from your members through mid-season and end of season member surveys.
All CSA monthly workshops are held at Just Food’s office- 210 East 51st Street between 2nd and 3rd Aves.

2008 Farm Bill Completed
After endless amounts of hard work on the part of farm and food advocates, Congress has finally produced a 2008 Farm Bill! It passed the week of May 12th by a veto-proof majority in both the House and the Senate.
Reaction to the bill has been mixed as many would have liked much greater subsidy reform for big farmers. Still others feel that the new bill is better than the old because it includes concrete and far reaching victories for conservation, beginning and minority farmers, local food systems, sustainable biomass production, competition, organic agriculture and even public health.
To see the National Campaign for Sustainable Agriculture’s summary of the bill, visit their website

Thanks Everyone!
Sincerely,
Paula Lukats
