Not Just Vegetables…

Astoria CSA offers you much more than vegetables. We also have a partnership with the Lewis-Waite cooperative of 15 farms and artisanal producers in and around Washington County, New York. They give us the opportunity to buy grass fed beef, pork, lamb, chicken, turkey, eggs, honey, maple syrup, yogurt, artisan cheeses and bread you would otherwise have to brave Manhattan for, all delivered to Arrow with your Golden Earthworm veggies. Items are packed (and in some cases baked, yum!) to order. Their newly revamped site http://csapasturedmeatandpoultry.com/csa/csa_35/default.aspx has more information about their products, too numerous to detail here, as well as links to some of the farm websites.

Their next delivery is Thursday, June 19th. The order deadline is this Saturday June 14th at midnight. To take advantage of this service you must first create a user ID for their website. To do that visit our membership page, enter the main shareholder’s email address and you will be directed to the CSA login information for Lewis Waite, where you can create your own ID and password for their site. Once you have created your Lewis Waite ID you can go directly there to order.

We will have access to the Arrow computer lab this Thursday, June 12 from 5-7 during distro to help people set up accounts and navigate the ordering process, which can be confusing the first time through.

STRAWBERRY BUS!

Golden Earthworm has U-Pick strawberries this weekend and next. Picking hours are Friday and Saturday June 13-14 and 20-21, 9am-5pm. CSA members get a discount on the price of boxes, $3.75/quart. We have rented a bus for Saturday the 21st. It is free but donations are accepted to help us continue to offer this service. Click on the membership tab above to donate. Bus leaves Arrow at 9 AM and will return from the farm at 3 PM.

Vermicomposting Workshop June 26

Now you’ve got those wonderful vegetables, doesn’t it seem like a shame to throw away the scraps? Did you know that you can use your vegetable trimmings, along with junk mail and other “garbage” to create a rich fertilizer that your houseplants or garden will thrive on? Come to our vermicomposting workshop from 6-7:30 on Thursday June 26 and let Helen Ho explain how to train houseworms to eat your bank statements. In Nature there is no garbage.

Storing Greens

Some of you have asked us for our advice on storing greens. I use Evert-Fresh green bags which are made from plastic (not great), but which I wash and re-use. I bought one package of bags a few years ago and we’re still using them, so they really do hold up! Here’s what to do… Wash the greens, wrap in a clean dish towel, and place in a (plastic) produce bag. Some people swear by ExtraLife disks, but I’ve never tried them. You can find all these products here or at your local Whole Foods or natural foods shop.–from Golden Earthworm’s newsletter. For more from GE visit their website: http://goldenearthworm.com/
