2) Farmer Delivery Help Needed
Our farmers, Matt and James, are looking for a strong set of arms to help with unloading Queens deliveries on Thursdays throughout the season. This person would meet the delivery man at the Sunnyside drop location, then continue to the Astoria and Jackson Heights locations. Time commitment is approximately 1:45-4:45. Payment is $40-50 per Thursday. Email info@goldenearthwormfarm.com if interested or for more details.
3) Beer: Local & Low-Carbon- Starts Thursday- Order now!
Our first of weekly beer deliveries will take place this Thursday! Place your orders now by going to the Bierkraft website (www.bierkraft.com). On the left column under “More Info” is the “CSA Pre-Order Form.” Follow that link to place your order (or click here). Note the number of growlers you would like (or how many you will exchange if you already have some) and your top 5-6 beer choices. Because kegs are small artisanal batches they run out frequently, note a few extra beer choices in case your first choice beer runs out. Include any other information Bierkraft asks for (CSA, name, phone #, cc#). There is NO CA SH exchange at ARROW. Your credit card will be charged after the delivery in case your bottle breaks or you do not return a growler from the previous week (growlers are a one-time $4 deposit plus cost of beer).
4) How-To Order CSA Pasture Meat/ Dairy- This Thursday- 5-7 PM @ Distro
The CSA Pasture site can be a little confusing for first-time users. Join an Astoria CSA member in the ARROW computer lab during this Thursday’s distro, 5-7 PM. We’ll show you how to set up your personal account, how to search for products you want, and how to place orders (and ensure the system records it). Next CSA Pasture Meat/ Dairy delivery is June 19. Order deadline is always the Saturday before delivery (June 14). Sign-in information is on the membership page (use the main shareholder’s email address): http://www.astoriacsa.com/join.php.
5) Strawberry Bus to Farm- June 21
Free bus to the Golden Earthworm Farm for Strawberry Picking (strawberry quarts are $3.75 each on the farm). Bus leaves ARROW at 9 AM Sharp, Saturday, June 21 and departs the farm at 3 PM (returning around 5:00 PM to ARROW). Bring a sack lunch, plenty of water and sunscreen as there are no nearby options for this on the farm. Email info@astoriacsa.com if you are interested in attending so we can form a general list. Include how many people you plan to bring. The bus is free, but please consider making a donation to the CSA (on the membership page) to continue to make programming like this available to everyone.
6) Learn to Vermicompost!- June 26
Find out more about how worms can turn your leftover veggie matter into rich compost for use on household plants and gardens. Vermicomposting is a fabulous way to reduce (stinky) garbage, junk mail, receipts and more without any noticeable s mells. Helen Ho from Queens Parks will demonstrate how to vermicompost in your own home at our June 26th distro from 6 to 7:30 PM at ARROW. Still unsure? 7) Sign up for your Volunteer Hours
Don’t forget to sign up for your volunteer hours. One four-hour session is required of every member (or please let us know what else you would like to volunteer doing). Please email volunteer@astoriacsa.com to arrange your date!
8) Donations! Donations! Donations!
Thank you to our members who have already donated! Your contribution will help make our low-income programming grow stronger in the coming years! Our donation feature is up and running on the website. Please consider helping us keep low-income shares thrivin g, whether it is $1 or $1,000! Log into your account (use the main shareholder’s email address) on the membership page (http://www.astoriacsa.com/join.php) and find the donation information at bottom. All money received goes towards supporting low-income shares.
9) *IMPORTANT* ARROW Overview
We all realize space in New York City is precious and are extremely thankful to be offered such a great place at ARROW Community Center free of charge for our CSA. A very important rule: there is NO CASH EXCHANGE on ARROW property. This means all Bierkraft and CSA Pasture orders must be paid by credit card, check or money order. Please remember that we are a very large group of visitors. Our privilege to use the space is up for review as the season progresses. Be aware that ARROW has their own programming going on while we are there (a large after-school and summer program) with lots of ki ds running around and not always looking where they kick a ball (watch out!)! Please speak with a CSA Core member if you have any questions, suggestions or concerns throughout the season so we can resolve them and bring them to the attention of the correct ARROW staff. We hope this to be a start of a long and fruitful relationship.
10) *IMPORTANT* Pick-Up Informatio n
Our 2008 season begins this Thursday, June 5! Pick up is every Thursday, 4:30-7:30 PM at ARROW Community Center (35-30 35th St. b/w 35th and 36th Aves.). Please enter through the green door on the left and sign in to pick up your share (and any extras). We are trying to move away from plastic bags this year– please bring a reusable tote to carry your veggies home in. You can always buy one of ours– see our merch page. Steinway Food Pantry arrives promptly at 7:35 to pick up any shares left behind. The CSA will not hold shares for members. Please be on time to get your veggies (or arrange for someone to pick them up for you)!
