Rick Field of Rick’s Picks has been selling his
innovatively spiced pickles at the Union Square Greenmarket on Wednesdays for
several years. He has won “Best in Show”
at the Rosendale, NY Picklefest (this year’s occurs November 18th for
more info visit: http://www.picklefest.com/) where he will certainly be contending for another
title. His pickles are now carried in
gourmet retail outlets from the glamorous precincts of eastern Long Island to
New Paltz, NY. He is also responsible
for the delicious relish at the ever-popular Shake Shack in Madison Square
Park. This is local food at it’s
best. He began in Brooklyn, buying
veggies at the greenmarket and pickling them up in his kitchen, as he
remembered doing with his mother. He
changed some recipes and developed others and today has a very successful
business on his hands. He recently
appeared on Martha Stewart, revealing the secrets to his Phat Beets. If you haven’t tried them I recommend you
hie down to Union Square next Wednesday (where as I recall he also plays some
phat beets at his booth and offers tasting samples) or visit his website for a
list of local retailers and mail order info: http://rickspicksnyc.com/order.php. If you are a
fellow pickler, click this link and learn how to make your own Phat Beets. http://rickspicksnyc.com/martha.html

CSA Day 2007 - SUNDAY, OCTOBER 21st from 11-3
Some of
the ongoing events planned for this year's CSA Day include Animal Shearing, Walking
tours, Potluck Lunch, Farmers' Homemade Soup Tastings, Haystack Games, Poi
Dancing, Soap Making Demonstration and more! Our farm shop will be open and stocked with
some wonderful items- pumpkins, produce, flowers, books, and unusual items
perfect for holiday gift giving!
Potluck Lunch
We ask
that you bring a dish to share with 3-4 people.
Don't forget to bring serving utensils, and put your name on the dish if you
would like it washed and returned to you. (We request
homemade dishes, but if you do buy something to bring, please use
discretion and leave the Dunkin Donuts home!)
Call for Volunteers!
We are looking for a few good men and women
to help us out on CSA Day by organizing the
potluck tables, directing parking, and checking people in. If you'd be willing
to help out for a two-hour shift, please let us know! The volunteer shifts
would run 11-1 and 1-3. Please e-mail us at info@goldenearthworm.com if you're
interested. THANK YOU!—Golden Earthworm
